The other evening I wandered into the swanky LA hot spot Scarpetta and ordered their seared Dwayne Johnson with a side of Beyonce, George Clooney and Victoria Secret Models. After devouring that delicious combination, I peered over the dessert menu and couldn’t resist ordering Ryan Gosling.

Hey, a girls got to eat!

Can the Canned Soup

Amy’s, Campbell’s, Healthy Choice, Progresso; how many of these canned soup brands do you have lining your kitchen pantry?

During the winter months we usually turn to soup in order to keep us from catching a chill. While it’s best to make your own soup from scratch, no one seems to have enough time to slave over the oven for hours on end in order to make the most flavor-rich stew.

Enter canned soup. Campbell’s, and the rest of the soupy gang are wintertime staples but are they really that healthy?

Here is a rundown of some popular canned soups:

Amy’s Organic Lentil Vegetable Soup: 160 calories (1 cup), 4 grams of fat, 680 mg of sodium, 8 grams of fiber & 7 grams of protein

Not one of the ingredients on the label is processed making it a hearty and healthy soup to help your reach spring with a smile on your face. Be sure to only indulge in the one cup serving size though because if you slurp down the entire can, you will have gulped down far more sodium than you need in a day.

Progresso High Fiber Three-Bean Chili with Beef: 140 calories (1 cup), 4 grams of fat, 480 mg of sodium, 7 grams of fiber & 8 grams of protein

The stats on this hearty meal aren’t too shabby. Unfortunately if you take a closer look at the ingredients label you will find sugar, modified food starch, hydrolyzed soy protein and some other ingredients that you thought you only had to deal with in science class. It’s best to avoid products with these added ingredients.

Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup: 120 calories (1 cup), 4 grams of fat, 1,780 mg of sodium, 1 gram of fiber & 3 grams of protein.

Ah yes, this soup is most likely in everyone’s pantry, whether they know how it got there or not. Sadly, it’s lacking in the nutrition. It may be low calorie but it’s severely lacking in the fiber and protein department, which means that if you eat this soup by itself, you will be hungry within the hour and need something else (enter the warm cinnamon buns). It would be smart to pair this soup with an ample protein source and add more vegetables to the mix but with the sodium levels so high and ingredients such as MSG, mechanically separated chicken, cornstarch and modified food starch rounding out the ingredients list, you would be better off leaving this canned soup on the grocery shelf, or donating the one you currently have.

Wolfgang Puck Organic Thick, Hardy Vegetable Soup: 130 calories (1 cup), 4 grams of fat, 850 mg of sodium, 3 grams of fiber & 2 grams of protein.

Wolfgang Puck sure knows how to make a tasty soup, if he didn’t, he certainly wouldn’t be as successful as he currently is. Too bad he isn’t very successful at making this soup healthier. There is not enough fiber or protein to justify this soup as a full meal, yet the sodium levels do just that. And while this may be an organic soup, the ingredients label has a laundry list of ingredients that would make anyone’s head spin. Autolyzed yeast paste and maltodextrin anyone?

Healthy Choice Italian Style Wedding Soup: 120 calories (1 cup), 2.5 grams of fat, 430 mg of sodium, 3 grams of fiber & 9 grams of protein.

High-five to the “lower” in sodium and higher in protein soup of the bunch. Wait, that high-five has to be retracted because the ingredients label is not as “warm and toasty” as the nutrition facts depicts. The most common word on the ingredients list is hydrolyzed, or in other words processed and other ingredients include sugar, white flour and… TRANS FATTY ACIDS! Step away from this soup.

Canned soup, regardless of the variety is all pretty similar. They all contain a lot of ingredients in order to keep them shelf stable. Your best bet is to go with the Amy’s brand because all of the soups boast impeccable nutrition labels (minus the sodium content) and ingredients lists.

Of course, the best option is to make your own soup. While you may think it is time consuming, making soup is quite possibly one of the easiest meals you can whip up, even after a long day at work.

McYoga Mat!

Take a pork patty, dip it in some BBQ sauce, top it with a few sliced onions and pickles and then place it in between to fluffy processed yoga mats.

What do you get?

A McRib!

That's right! This "swoon-worthy" club sandwich that everyone seems to jones, contains ingredients that are also found in yoga mats!

Azodicarbonamide, ammonium sulfate and polysorbate 80.

Azodicarbonamide "is most commonly used in the manufacture of foamed plastics like in gym mats and the soles of shoes." This compound is actually banned in Europe and Australia as a food additive!

Don't think eating yoga mats is going to get you a lean, taut body like you would get if you practiced yoga because this mess of a food item also contains 500 calories, 26 grams of fat, 10 grams of saturated fat, 980 grams of sodium and 11 grams of sugar! Atrocious!

Do yourself a favor. Drive on past McDonalds and head straight to the gym.

If you get hungry, eat some almonds that you so smartly remembered, don't take a bite out of the mat you're sitting on.

Or... just make your own "McRib" - guaranteed to be 10 times healthier and contain no gym by products!

What the heck is in there!

A Dashing Diet

Have you ever heard of the Dash Diet?

Probably not, right?

Perhaps you should look into it if you’re struggling with your weight or are just trying to find a way to eat healthier because it has been ranked the number one diet in America by U.S. News.

The Dash Diet received 4.8 stars out of 5 by a panel of 22 experts in nutrition and diet.

While you might be wondering what on earth this diet entails, and no it doesn’t have you dash to the kitchen or a restaurant at every meal (to burn extra calories), what DASH really stands for is, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.

Hypertension is a term used to described high blood pressure. People with hypertension are at a high risk for kidney disease, heart failure, stroke and vision problems.  Eating a diet filled with vegetables, whole grains and fruits along with some lean proteins and healthy fats helps achieve a lower blood pressure reading thus reducing your chances for such complications.

On top of having people adopt healthier diets, the Dash Diet notes how important exercise is for lowering blood pressure as well. So I guess this diet’s rank as number one is well deserved.

The U.S. News panel assessed a total of 20 popular diets and the common theme “across the diets that excelled in healthiness is adequate calories supplied by a heavy load of vegetables, fruits and whole grains, a modest amount of lean protein, nonfat dairy, healthy fats, and an occasional treat.”

Here is how all of the diets ranked:

  1. The Dash Diet, 4.8 out of 5 stars
  2. The TLC (Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes) Diet, 4.7 out of 5 stars
  3. The Mediterranean Diet, 4.6 out of 5 stars
  4. The Mayo Clinic Diet, 4.5 out of 5 stars
  5. Volumetrics Diet, 4.5 out of 5 stars
  6. Weight Watchers, 4.4 out of 5 stars
  7. Jenny Craig, 4.3 out of 5 stars
  8. The Ornish Diet, 4.1 out of 5 stars
  9. Vegetarian Diet, 4 out of 5 stars
  10. Nutrisystem Diet, 3.9 out of 5 stars
  11. The Glycemic-Index Diet, 3.5 out of 5 stars
  12. Slim-Fast Diet, 3.5 out of 5 stars
  13. The Zone Diet, 3.5 out of 5 stars
  14. South Beach Diet, 3.3 stars out of 5 stars
  15. Eco-Atkins Diet, 3.1 out of 5 stars
  16. Medifast Diet, 3 out of 5 stars
  17. Paleo Diet, 2.2 out of 5 stars
  18. Raw Food, 2.1 out of 5 stars
  19. Atkins Diet, 2 out of 5 stars

You may have no idea what ANY of these diets are… so have a look. See, you learn something new every day! In the least, hopefully you learn that a healthy diet is comprised of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and healthy fat!

You can now “dash” on over to your grocery store and pick up the accoutrements to make your next meal healthy!
